In 2013, the United States celebrated one of its most famous landmarks on a grand scale. This five-ounce silver coin, part of the America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coin Program, features a purity of 0.999 fine silver. With a diameter far exceeding a standard circulating quarter, this large-format coin allows for an incredibly detailed look at a monumental American achievement. The reverse of the coin focuses on the human effort behind the monument, depicting workers as they sculpt the colossal likenesses of Thomas Jefferson and George Washington. The actual memorial in South Dakota, which also features Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln, was designed and sculpted by Gutzon Borglum. Construction on the massive cliffside project began on October 4, 1927, and concluded on October 31, 1941. Along the rim, inscriptions denote the weight and purity as 999 fine silver 5.0 ounce. On the obverse, the familiar portrait of George Washington graces the center. Surrounding his likeness are the traditional inscriptions of Liberty, In God We Trust, United States of America, and the face value of Quarter Dollar. This particular issue from 2013 was struck at the Philadelphia Mint and features a brilliant uncirculated finish, with a total mintage of 35,000 pieces.
