This impressive five-ounce silver issue from 2013 celebrates Mount Rushmore, a monument carved into a granite mountainside in South Dakota. Sculptor Gutzon Borglum designed the massive monument, which features the likenesses of four American presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. The monumental carving effort commenced on October 4, 1927, and reached completion on October 31, 1941. The granite composition of the mountain was the primary reason it was chosen for this grand artistic endeavor. The reverse side of this coin focuses on the human effort behind the monument, depicting laborers at work carving the faces of Washington and Jefferson.
