The 2013 Philadelphia Mint issue of the America the Beautiful series brings one of the nation's most colossal artistic achievements to the canvas of a quarter dollar. This brilliant uncirculated coin highlights the immense labor involved in shaping the granite cliffs of South Dakota. The reverse illustration focuses on the physical creation of the monument, depicting workers as they carve the massive likenesses of Thomas Jefferson and George Washington into the mountainside. Historically, the grand monument was sculpted by Gutzon Borglum and features the faces of four American presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. The actual construction of this mountain sculpture spanned from October 4, 1927 to October 31, 1941, requiring a budget that neared 1 million dollars to complete. The obverse of the coin displays the familiar portrait of George Washington, originally designed by John Flanagan. Surrounding this central image are the traditional inscriptions confirming its origin and value, including "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", "LIBERTY", "IN GOD WE TRUST", and "QUARTER DOLLAR", alongside the "P" mint mark indicating its origin from the Philadelphia Mint.
