2013-S Quarter ATB Mount Rushmore Proof (Silver)

0.1788 troy oz .900 2013 Proof

This 2013 silver quarter, struck with a brilliant proof finish at the San Francisco Mint, celebrates one of the most famous landmarks in the United States. Composed of 0.17875 troy ounces of silver, the coin belongs to the America the Beautiful series and carries the 'S' mint mark. The design connects the artistry of coin minting with the monumental scale of mountain sculpting. The reverse side of the coin captures a dynamic scene of workers carving the massive granite faces of Thomas Jefferson and George Washington. This design honors the incredible labor required to shape the memorial, which stands at an elevation of 5,725 feet above sea level. Sculpted on a granite formation that experiences an incredibly slow erosion rate of just one inch every 10,000 years, the actual monument features the likenesses of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. The massive project was designed by Gutzon Borglum, a sculptor born in the Idaho Territory in 1867. Construction on the monument commenced on October 4, 1927, and concluded on October 31, 1941, totaling nearly 1 million dollars in costs. On the obverse, the coin displays the classic portrait of George Washington, originally created by John Flanagan. Clear inscriptions on this side include 'UNITED STATES OF AMERICA', 'LIBERTY', 'IN GOD WE TRUST', and 'QUARTER DOLLAR'. The reverse is inscribed with 'MOUNT RUSHMORE', 'SOUTH DAKOTA', '2013', and the traditional motto 'E PLURIBUS UNUM'.
