Introduced by the United States Mint in 2006, the American Buffalo series represents a significant milestone in modern American coinage. This 2014 issue is struck from one troy ounce of highly pure 0.9999 fine gold, carrying a face value of fifty dollars. Backed fully by the United States government, this coin has been certified at the highest possible grade of Mint State 70, indicating its flawless condition. The obverse of the coin features a powerful profile portrait of a Native American chieftain. This design is directly inspired by the classic 1913 Indian Head nickel created by sculptor James Earle Fraser. The word LIBERTY is inscribed along the upper right edge, accompanied by the 2014 year of issue and a small letter F near the neck of the portrait. On the reverse, a massive American bison stands in profile, a depiction based on the famous bison named Black Diamond. This side of the coin displays several traditional inscriptions, including the nation of origin, the mottoes IN GOD WE TRUST and E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the technical specifications of the metal content, reading 1 OZ. 0.9999 FINE GOLD alongside the 50 Dollars denomination.
