The year 2014 marked a creative milestone for the Royal Canadian Mint's ongoing Lunar series with the release of its fifth featured design. Struck in one troy ounce of highly refined 0.9999 fine silver, this fifteen dollar denomination coin showcases a brilliant proof finish that highlights the contrast between its frosted details and mirror-like fields. The issue was limited to a maximum production of 28,888 pieces, each backed as official legal tender by the Canadian government. On the reverse, a spirited horse is depicted mid-gallop, capturing a sense of energy and movement. This design, created by Canadian artist Aries Cheung, also incorporates the traditional Chinese character representing the horse. The obverse displays the right-facing portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, accompanied by the 2014 year of issue and the face value of 15 dollars.
