In 2014, the United States Mint marked the fiftieth anniversary of one of its most famous coin designs. This special commemorative edition is struck in three-quarters of an ounce of 0.9999 fine gold, elevating the familiar half dollar into a precious metal masterpiece. The issue honors both the enduring legacy of President John F. Kennedy and the five decades of the coin that bears his image. The front of the coin displays the classic portrait of Kennedy designed by Gilroy Roberts. To mark the golden anniversary of the design, the dual dates of 1964 to 2014 are inscribed below the bust, alongside the traditional motto "IN GOD WE TRUST". On the reverse, Frank Gasparro's detailed rendering of the Great Seal of the United States takes center stage. An eagle clutches an olive branch and arrows, shielded by a heraldic design. To denote the unique composition of this commemorative issue, the gold weight and purity are specifically inscribed directly beneath the eagle.
