In 2014, the United States Mint commemorated a half-century of one of its most recognizable designs by striking a special edition of the Kennedy half dollar in pure gold. Crafted at the West Point Mint, this proof coin is struck from three-quarters of an ounce of 0.9999 fine gold, combining modern purity with a classic mid-century design. The obverse features the original 1964 portrait of President John F. Kennedy, created by Gilroy Roberts. To mark the fifty-year milestone, it displays the dual dates of 1964 to 2014. The familiar motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" is inscribed across the field, framing the profile of the president. On the reverse, Frank Gasparro's design is based on the Presidential Seal, depicting a heraldic eagle with a shield on its chest. The eagle holds an olive branch in one talon and a bundle of 13 arrows in the other, symbolizing peace and defense. Unlike standard circulating half dollars, this gold edition includes specific inscriptions below the eagle detailing its weight and purity, reading "3/4 oz. 0.9999 FINE GOLD" alongside the face value of "HALF DOLLAR."
