In 2015, the United States Mint released a striking five-ounce silver coin as part of the America the Beautiful series, celebrating the Homestead National Monument of America in Nebraska. This impressive specimen is struck in five troy ounces of 0.999 fine silver and features a distinct burnished finish, which offers a soft, matte-like appearance that highlights the details of the engraving. The reverse of the coin focuses on the fundamental necessities of pioneer survival on the Great Plains: food, shelter, and water. The design depicts a log cabin alongside a pump for water and ears of corn, representing the basic elements required to establish a home under the Homestead Act of 1862. This historic act allowed citizens to claim 160 acres of land in the West, a policy that shaped the nation for over a century until its eventual repeal in 1976. Inscriptions on this side include "HOMESTEAD", "NEBRASKA", "2015", and the traditional motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM". On the obverse, the coin carries the familiar portrait of George Washington. Surrounding the first president are the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", "LIBERTY", "IN GOD WE TRUST", and the denomination "QUARTER DOLLAR". A small "P" mintmark signifies its origin at the Philadelphia Mint.
