The 2016 Austrian Gold Philharmonic coin stands as a brilliant tribute to the rich musical legacy of Vienna. Struck in one troy ounce of exceptionally pure 0.9999 fine gold, this bullion piece carries a face value of 100 Euros. Backed by the Austrian Mint, the coin represents a continuation of a celebrated series that first debuted on October 10, 1989. Originally issued with a face value of 2,000 Austrian schillings, the denomination transitioned to the euro currency in 2002. The design of the Philharmonic has remained beautifully consistent since its introduction. The obverse showcases the majestic pipe organ housed within the Golden Hall of Vienna's famous concert hall, the Musikverein. This side also displays the year of issue, 2016, along with the weight and the face value. The reverse features a harmonious arrangement of classical instruments, highlighting a cello, a violin, a harp, a Vienna horn, and a bassoon. While this 2016 edition contains one ounce of gold, the Philharmonic series has expanded over time to include various sizes ranging from 1/25 ounce to 1/2 ounce. The design has also been adapted for other metals, including a silver version introduced in 2008 and a platinum version that debuted in 2016. For its 15th anniversary in 2004, a massive 1,000 ounce version was even produced, containing over 31 kilograms of pure gold.
