In 2016, the United States Mint continued its celebrated America the Beautiful series with a quarter dollar honoring the natural wonder of Shawnee National Forest. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this brilliant uncirculated coin highlights the unique geological and biological diversity found in the state of Illinois. The reverse of the coin displays a striking scene featuring a red-tailed hawk gliding through the air above the distinctive formation known as Camel Rock, capturing the wild spirit of the forest. Inscriptions on this side include the name of the forest, the state name, and the traditional motto "E Pluribus Unum." On the obverse, the coin presents the classic portrait of George Washington, originally created by John Flanagan. Alongside the president's likeness, the inscriptions read "United States of America," "Liberty," "In God We Trust," and "Quarter Dollar," accompanied by the "P" mint mark denoting its Philadelphia origin.
