In 2016, the United States Mint paid tribute to one of its most celebrated historical designs by releasing a special centennial edition of the 1916 Mercury Dime. Struck at the West Point Mint in New York, this modern tribute transforms the original circulating ten-cent piece into a stunning specimen crafted from 0.1000 troy ounces of highly pure 0.9999 fine gold. Unlike proof issues, this commemorative release was struck as a business strike, offering a distinct satin-like appearance that highlights the intricate details of the iconic artwork. The obverse of the coin features the classic portrait of young Liberty wearing a winged Phrygian cap. Although the wings on her cap were originally intended to symbolize freedom of thought, the design became widely and affectionately known to the public as the Mercury Dime due to its resemblance to the Roman messenger god. The reverse of the coin displays a fasces wrapped with an olive branch, representing both strength and peace. Legible inscriptions on this gold release include the traditional motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, the denomination ONE DIME, and the West Point W mint mark, alongside modern markings indicating its gold content of 1/10 oz and 24K purity.
