In 2016, the United States Mint at West Point celebrated a major milestone in American coinage by reissuing one of its most beloved twentieth-century designs. This special release marks the 100th anniversary of the original 1916 Mercury Dime. While the historic original was struck in silver, this modern tribute is crafted from 0.1000 troy ounces of highly pure 0.9999 fine gold. To honor the legacy of the original coin, the West Point Mint produced this gold version to match the physical size and diameter of the 1916 silver dime. The obverse of the coin features the iconic depiction of young Liberty wearing a winged Phrygian cap, a design originally created by Adolph A. Weinman. Though often referred to as the Mercury Dime due to the cap's resemblance to the Roman messenger god, the design was always intended to represent freedom of thought. On the reverse, Weinman's classic imagery continues with a detailed fasces and an olive branch, symbolizing both strength and peace. This particular issue was struck as a business strike and has been certified in Specimen 69 condition, offering a beautiful look at a centennial masterpiece.
