In 2016, the United States Mint marked a major centennial by recreating one of its most celebrated twentieth-century coin designs in pure gold. This special issue honors the original 10-cent piece from 1916, commonly known as the Mercury Dime. Minted at the West Point facility in New York, this modern tribute is crafted from one-tenth of an ounce of extremely pure 0.9999 fine gold. The obverse features the classic portrait of young Liberty wearing a winged Phrygian cap, a design originally conceived by Adolph A. Weinman. Though the wings on her cap were intended to represent freedom of thought, the imagery closely resembled the Roman god Mercury, giving the original coin its famous nickname. On the reverse, the design displays a traditional fasces alongside an olive branch, symbolizing both strength and peace. This particular specimen is certified in perfect Specimen 70 condition, highlighting the flawless execution of this historic centennial tribute.
