2016-W 1/10 oz Gold Mercury Dime SP-70 PCGS (FS, Cent'l Label)
In 2016, the United States Mint marked the centennial of one of its most celebrated twentieth-century coin designs. This special issue recreates the classic 1916 dime in 0.1000 troy ounces of pure 0.9999 fine gold. Struck at the West Point Mint in New York, the coin carries the 'W' mint mark, transforming a historic circulating design into a modern masterpiece of precious metal. The obverse features the famous portrait created by Adolph A. Weinman, depicting a youthful Liberty wearing a winged Phrygian cap. This winged cap, which historically symbolized freedom of thought, led the public to mistake Liberty for the Roman god Mercury, giving the design its popular nickname. The inscriptions 'IN GOD WE TRUST' and '2016' accompany the portrait. On the reverse, the design showcases a fasces, representing strength and unity, entwined with an olive branch to symbolize peace. The inscriptions include 'UNITED STATES OF AMERICA', 'E PLURIBUS UNUM', and 'ONE DIME', alongside modern markings indicating the coin's 24-karat gold purity and weight. This particular specimen has been certified in perfect Specimen 70 (SP-70) condition, representing a flawless execution of a historic American design.
