In 2016, the United States Mint marked a major milestone by honoring one of its most celebrated twentieth-century coin designs. This special release recreates the classic 1916 Mercury Dime in pure gold, celebrating the centenary of the original masterpiece. Crafted at the West Point Mint, this modern tribute was designed to match the physical dimensions and diameter of its silver predecessor from 1916, but is struck in 0.1000 troy ounces of 0.9999 fine gold. The obverse showcases the famous design by Adolph A. Weinman, featuring Liberty wearing a winged Phrygian cap. This distinctive headgear, which historically symbolized freedom of thought, led the public to mistake Liberty for the Roman god Mercury, giving the coin its famous nickname. The inscriptions "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the dual-era significance of the "2016" date accompany the portrait. On the reverse, the design displays a traditional fasces, representing strength and unity, entwined with an olive branch to symbolize peace. The inscriptions include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", "ONE DIME", and the legendary motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM". To denote its modern composition, the reverse also features inscriptions indicating its 24-karat gold purity and weight. This particular piece has been certified in Specimen 70 condition, representing a flawless strike of this historic centennial tribute.
