Struck at the West Point Mint, the 2016 half-ounce gold proof coin represents a beautiful marriage of traditional and contemporary American numismatic art. The piece is crafted from 0.9167 fine gold, containing exactly one-half troy ounce of precious metal. Its highly polished, mirror-like fields contrast sharply with the frosted details of the design, a signature characteristic of the United States Mint's proof-coining process. The obverse presents a celebrated depiction of Lady Liberty, originally created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. She is shown stepping forward with wind-swept hair, holding a lit torch to light her path in one hand and an olive branch of peace in the other. The word LIBERTY is inscribed above her, alongside the year 2016. On the reverse, a detailed family scene designed by Miley Busiek depicts a male eagle in mid-flight carrying an olive branch to a nest containing a female eagle and their young.
