The 2017 American Gold Eagle, with its face value of five dollars, showcases some of the most celebrated imagery in United States coinage. Despite its compact size, containing one-tenth of an ounce of gold, the coin captures a remarkable level of detail on both of its faces. On the obverse, a classic figure of Lady Liberty is depicted mid-stride, moving forward against a backdrop of radiating sunbeams. This elegant presentation is adapted from the famous Gold Double Eagle design created by sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The word LIBERTY is inscribed above her, and the year 2017 is clearly marked to her right. The reverse of the coin shifts focus to a powerful natural scene featuring a family of bald eagles. A male eagle is captured mid-flight, carrying an olive branch back to a nest where a female eagle and their young await. This side of the coin also displays the national mottos IN GOD WE TRUST and E PLURIBUS UNUM, alongside inscriptions indicating the country of origin, the gold content, and the five-dollar denomination.
