The 2017 Native American dollar, struck at the Denver Mint, celebrates a monumental intellectual achievement in American history. The reverse of the coin depicts Sequoyah, the legendary Cherokee polymath, captured in the act of writing. He is shown recording his newly created Cherokee syllabary, a system of writing that revolutionized literacy and communication for his people. The design features his name spelled out alongside the denomination of one dollar. On the obverse, the coin retains the classic portrait of Sacagawea carrying her young son, Jean Baptiste. This side carries the familiar inscriptions of liberty and the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST." Rather than appearing on the flat surfaces of the coin, the year of issue, the "D" mint mark, and the motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" are placed along the outer rim.
