This impressive five-ounce silver coin belongs to the America the Beautiful program, celebrating the country's national parks and historic sites. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint with a distinctive burnished finish, this specimen honors the George Rogers Clark National Historical Park in Indiana. The substantial size of the coin allows for a highly detailed presentation of its historical subject matter, struck in 0.999 fine silver. The reverse side portrays a pivotal moment from the American Revolutionary War in 1779. It depicts George Rogers Clark guiding his men through cold, flooded plains as they advance toward Fort Sackville. This successful military expedition weakened British influence in the region and helped secure American authority over the territory in the subsequent 1783 Treaty of Paris. The dynamic scene was designed by Frank Morris and brought to life through the engraving work of Michael Gaudioso. Inscriptions on this side include the name of the commander, the state of Indiana, the year 2017, and the traditional motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM". On the obverse, the coin displays the familiar portrait of George Washington. Surrounding the first president's likeness are the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", "LIBERTY", "IN GOD WE TRUST", and the face value of "QUARTER DOLLAR". A clear "P" mint mark is also visible, indicating its origin from the Philadelphia facility.
