The Somali Elephant series is celebrated for its shifting reverse imagery, and the 2017 issue presents a particularly vivid scene from the African wilderness. On this release, a single elephant is depicted journeying across the Serengeti. The background is rich with detail, showing a traditional grass hut, a tall coconut tree, and a sun rising over the horizon. The inscriptions on this side include "AFRICAN WILDLIFE", "ELEPHANT", and details of the metal content, noting its half-ounce weight and 0.9999 silver purity. On the other side, the coin displays the official Somalian Coat of Arms, flanked by the split year 2017. The face value of 50 Shillings is also clearly inscribed. Although issued for Somalia, this coin was manufactured in Germany at the Bavarian State Mint. The 2017 edition represents a notable milestone for the mint and the series, as it is the very first time this specific half-ounce silver size was produced.
