2017 South Africa 1 oz Silver Krugerrand Premium BU
In 2017, the South African Mint marked a monumental milestone by releasing its very first premium uncirculated silver coin. This special issue celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of the famous Gold Krugerrand, a legendary series that first emerged in 1967. To honor this half-century legacy, the mint produced a limited run of 1,000,000 of these fine silver pieces, striking them in one troy ounce of 0.999 pure silver. The obverse of the coin displays the profile of Paul Kruger, flanked by the name of the issuing nation, South Africa, written in both Afrikaans and English. This classic portrait connects the modern silver issue directly to the historic design lineage of its golden predecessor. On the reverse, a springbok antelope bounds across the landscape. The design is rich with details, including the 2017 minting year, the face value of 1 Rand, and the weight of the silver. A distinctive circular privy mark containing the number 50 is stamped just above the antelope, serving as a permanent visual commemoration of five decades of Krugerrand history.
