2017 South Africa 1 oz Silver Krugerrand Proof

In 2017, the South African Mint marked a major milestone by releasing its very first Proof Silver Krugerrand. This release celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of the Gold Krugerrand, which originally debuted on July 3, 1967, as the world's pioneer gold bullion coin. To honor this half-century legacy, this special silver edition was struck in one ounce of 0.999 fine silver, with a limited mintage of 15,000 pieces. The obverse of the coin displays the profile of Paul Kruger, the first and only president of South Africa. Surrounding his portrait are inscriptions of the nation's name, rendered in both Afrikaans and English. This classic design connects the modern silver issue directly to the historic roots of South African currency. On the reverse, the iconic springbok antelope is depicted in mid-stride. Positioned just above the antelope is a circular anniversary privy mark containing the number 50. This commemorative mark features the inscriptions '1967', '2017', and '50 YEAR ANNIVERSARY' to highlight five decades of the Krugerrand series. The reverse also displays the minting year, the face value of 1 Rand, and the silver weight, written in both Afrikaans and English as 'FYNSILWER 1 OZ FINE SILVER'.
