The 2017 fifty-dollar American Gold Eagle is a striking example of modern United States coinage. Struck at the West Point Mint in New York, this specimen is crafted from one troy ounce of gold with a purity of 0.9167. As a proof coin, it features a highly reflective, mirror-like surface that accentuates the depth and detail of its classic designs. On the obverse, the coin displays a celebrated depiction of Lady Liberty. She is shown in full stride, holding a lit torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other. This iconic image is adapted from the famous early twentieth-century Gold Double Eagle designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The reverse, designed by Miley Busiek, presents a narrative of family and nature. It depicts a male eagle in mid-flight carrying an olive branch back to a nest where a female eagle and their young eaglets wait. Legible inscriptions on this side include the national mottos "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM," alongside the weight and face value of fifty dollars.
