The obverse features a powerful profile portrait of a Native American, a classic design originally created by James Earle Fraser. On the reverse, a majestic American bison stands in profile, a design adapted from the historic Buffalo Nickel. This particular animal representation is widely believed to have been modeled after Black Diamond, a famous bison from the early twentieth century.
