The 2018 American Buffalo gold coin showcases a celebrated design from United States numismatic history. The front of the coin features a powerful profile portrait of a Native American man, originally sculpted by James Earle Fraser. The word LIBERTY is inscribed along the upper right edge, with the 2018 year of issue positioned at the lower left. Fraser's initial, F, is visible just below the date. On the reverse, a majestic American bison stands in profile, a design adapted from the historic Buffalo Nickel. The animal depicted on the coin is widely believed to have been modeled after Black Diamond, a famous bison from the early twentieth century. The reverse inscriptions include the United States of America, the traditional mottos E PLURIBUS UNUM and IN GOD WE TRUST, and the coin's weight, purity, and face value of fifty dollars.
