The year 2018 welcomed the eleventh animal in the traditional twelve year Chinese zodiac cycle, celebrated on this Australian legal tender coin. Struck from half an ounce of highly pure 0.9999 fine silver, this piece showcases the meticulous craftsmanship of the Perth Mint. The coin honors those born under the sign of the dog, a zodiac animal associated with birth years ranging from 1922 to 2018, including 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, and 2006. On the reverse, a colorized depiction features a German Shepherd resting in the grass alongside its young pup, accompanied by delicate Chinese peony blossoms. This side also displays the Chinese character representing the dog, the English phrase "Year of the Dog", and the traditional "P" mint mark of the Perth Mint. The obverse features the classic effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Ian Rank-Broadley. Surrounding the portrait are clear inscriptions detailing the 2018 date, the 50 Cents face value, the country name of Australia, and the weight and purity of the silver content.
