In 2018, the Denver Mint struck this quarter dollar as the forty-fourth entry in the celebrated America the Beautiful series. This coin honors Cumberland Island National Seashore, a protected coastal sanctuary in Georgia that was first proposed in 1972 and officially integrated into the National Park System in 1982. As the most biodiverse barrier island in its state, Cumberland Island encompasses twenty-three unique ecological communities, ranging from freshwater lakes and saltwater marshes to sandy beaches and windswept dunes. The obverse of this brilliant uncirculated coin displays the classic profile of George Washington, originally modeled by John Flanagan. Surrounding the portrait are the traditional inscriptions denoting the nation of origin, the coin's face value, and the foundational mottos of liberty and faith. A small letter D indicates its production at the Denver facility. On the reverse side, the design captures the natural essence of the Georgia shoreline. The inscriptions framing this scenic depiction include the name of the park, the state of Georgia, the year of issue, and the national motto of unity.
