This modern silver round, minted in 2018, celebrates the historic entryways of one of the world's most famous ancient cities. Struck from one troy ounce of 0.999 fine silver, the piece serves as the second entry in the Gates of Jerusalem series. This specific release focuses on the Lion's Gate, an architectural marvel constructed between 1538 and 1539. The gate itself gets its name from the pair of carved lions that flank its sides, which are part of the larger defensive walls erected in the sixteenth century under the direction of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. The front of the round showcases the Lion's Gate, accompanied by inscriptions detailing the year of issue, the purity of the metal, and the weight of the silver. These details are written in both English and Hebrew. On the back, a stylized artistic rendering depicts the various gates surrounding the Old City of Jerusalem. The words "Gates of Jerusalem" are inscribed in both English and Hebrew, and the official mark of the Holy Land Mint is also present. This proof round was produced by the Holy Land Mint of Israel with a limited release of only 3,600 pieces.
