In 2018, the United States Mint released a commemorative silver dollar marking one hundred years since the conclusion of the First World War. This coin, struck in Brilliant Uncirculated finish at the Philadelphia Mint, honors the four million seven hundred thousand American men and women who served during the global conflict. Congress authorized the creation of this commemorative piece in 2014, and the final imagery was chosen through a public design competition held in 2016. The front of the coin, titled Soldier's Charge, depicts a determined World War I soldier clutching a rifle as he moves forward. This side features the word LIBERTY, the dual dates of 1918 and 2018, and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. The reverse side, titled Poppies in the Wire, presents a poignant contrast with delicate poppy flowers tangled in sharp strands of barbed wire. This reverse design includes the inscriptions UNITED STATES of AMERICA, ONE DOLLAR, and E PLURIBUS UNUM. Containing 0.7734 troy ounces of silver with a purity of 90 percent, this dollar is backed by the United States government. The issue was limited to a maximum mintage of 350,000 pieces, making it a highly detailed and meaningful tribute to those who served a century before its release.
