In 2018, the San Francisco Mint struck a beautiful silver proof quarter celebrating the natural heritage of Rhode Island. As part of the expansive fifty-six coin America the Beautiful series, this specific issue honors the Block Island National Wildlife Refuge, a vital sanctuary for migratory birds. Crafted from 90 percent silver, the coin contains 0.17875 troy ounces of precious metal and showcases the brilliant, mirrored finish characteristic of proof strikes. The reverse design captures a dramatic coastal scene, depicting a black-crowned night heron soaring gracefully through the air. In the background, a lonely lighthouse stands watch over the sandy beach. This side of the coin bears the inscriptions BLOCK ISLAND, RHODE ISLAND, 2018, and the traditional motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. On the obverse, the classic profile portrait of George Washington, originally created by John Flanagan, remains the focal point. Surrounding the first president are the familiar inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the denomination QUARTER DOLLAR.
