Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this 2018 silver quarter honors the watery wilderness of Voyageurs National Park in Minnesota. The coin represents the forty-third release in the fifty-six part America the Beautiful series. Composed of 90 percent silver, this proof-finish coin contains 0.17875 troy ounces of precious metal, with its quality and weight guaranteed by the United States Mint. The reverse design captures the spirit of the park, which was established in 1975 to protect a vast network of water routes. Named in tribute to the French-Canadian fur traders who once traveled these paths, the park is famous for its four massive lakes and primary access by boat or canoe. Beneath these waters lie some of the oldest exposed geology on Earth, with rock formations dating from 1 to 3 billion years old. The reverse displays the name of the park alongside the state name of Minnesota and the year 2018. On the obverse, the classic portrait of George Washington faces left. Surrounding the first president are the familiar inscriptions of Liberty, In God We Trust, United States of America, and the Quarter Dollar denomination. The small S mint mark below the motto indicates its origin from the San Francisco facility, where it was crafted to the high standards of a proof strike.
