The obverse of the coin displays the profile of Paul Kruger, who served as the first president of South Africa. Surrounding his portrait are inscriptions of the nation's name in two of its official languages, English and Afrikaans, reading "SOUTH AFRICA" and "SUID-AFRIKA". On the reverse, a springbok antelope bounds across the African landscape.
