2018 South Africa 1 oz Silver Krugerrand Proof
Introduced in 2018, this issue represents only the second year that the South African Mint has produced a proof-quality Silver Krugerrand. While the gold version of this famous series holds the distinction of being the first gold bullion coin ever minted globally when it debuted on July 3, 1967, this modern silver counterpart brings the legendary design to a new metal format with a limited mintage of just 15,000 pieces. Crafted from one ounce of 0.999 fine silver, the coin displays meticulous design details on both sides. The obverse bears the likeness of Paul Kruger, who served as the first and only president of the South African Republic. Surrounding his portrait are inscriptions of the nation's name rendered in both English and Afrikaans. The reverse side showcases the springbok antelope, a swift and graceful creature recognized as the national animal of South Africa. Alongside the central wildlife motif, the reverse includes inscriptions indicating the 2018 year of issue, the metal weight, and the face value of 1 Rand, all struck with the sharp contrast and polished finish characteristic of a proof coin.
