In 2019, the United States Mint released a special commemorative half dollar marking exactly half a century since humans first walked on the moon. Struck at the Denver Mint, this coin features a distinctive curved shape, a physical design element that mirrors the rounded contours of space exploration equipment and celestial bodies. The concave obverse side displays a solitary footprint pressed into the dusty lunar ground, a visual reminder of Neil Armstrong's historic first steps on July 20, 1969. Arcing above this impression are the names of the three pioneering American spaceflight initiatives: Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo. The inscriptions 'LIBERTY', 'IN GOD WE TRUST', and the year '2019' are also integrated into this side of the coin. On the convex reverse, the design recreates a famous moment captured in space. It depicts the reflection visible in Astronaut Buzz Aldrin's helmet visor. Within the curved frame of the visor, observers can see the figure of Neil Armstrong, the American flag, and the lunar lander resting on the moon's surface.
