In 2019, the Philadelphia Mint produced a special silver dollar to mark a half-century since humanity first walked on the moon. This issue represents a technical milestone for the United States Mint, being the very first silver dollar they produced using a higher purity of 0.999 fine silver. Containing 0.8595 troy ounces of silver, the coin is a physical celebration of one of the greatest technological triumphs of the twentieth century. The coin's design captures the essence of the lunar voyage. On the obverse, a single boot print is pressed into the dusty surface of the moon. Surrounding this iconic image are the names of the three pioneering American space exploration initiatives: Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo. The inscriptions also include the year 2019 and the traditional motto, IN GOD WE TRUST. The reverse side offers a dramatic perspective of the historic moment on July 20, 1969, when Neil Armstrong became the first person to step onto the lunar surface. The scene is rendered as a reflection in the visor of Buzz Aldrin's helmet, showing Armstrong, the American flag, and the lunar lander. This side also carries the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ONE DOLLAR, and E PLURIBUS UNUM.
