In 2019, a highly unusual commemorative coin was struck to mark a half-century since humanity first walked on the moon. This five-dollar gold piece is notable for its distinct domed shape, a physical curve that lends incredible depth to its space-themed imagery. Minted at the West Point facility, the coin contains 0.2419 troy ounces of gold and was produced with a strict mintage limit of 50,000 specimens. The concave front of the coin features an iconic lunar footprint pressed into the dusty ground. Arcing above this symbol of human achievement are the names of the three pioneering NASA space initiatives: Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo. The inscriptions "LIBERTY", "IN GOD WE TRUST", and the 2019 date are also clearly visible on this side. On the convex reverse, the design captures a legendary perspective from July 1969. It recreates the reflection visible in the visor of Buzz Aldrin's helmet, showing the figure of Neil Armstrong, the American flag, and the lunar lander Eagle on the moon's surface. This side carries the face value "FIVE DOLLARS" alongside "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and the traditional motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM".
