In 2020, the British government issued a remarkably limited sovereign coin as part of its celebrated Britannia Collection. Struck from 0.2500 troy ounces of highly pure 0.9995 fine platinum, this quarter-ounce piece is finished to a brilliant proof standard. With a maximum mintage of just 160 coins, and a mere 150 of those allocated for the limited edition presentation, it represents an incredibly scarce issue for students of modern British numismatics. The obverse of this 25-pound denomination coin features the fifth official coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Created by designer Jody Clark, this elegant effigy is accompanied by the monarch's name and the face value of the coin. On the reverse, artist James Tottle presents a powerful and modern interpretation of Britannia. Rather than a static pose, she is depicted standing resolutely against the elements, facing directly into the wind with a trident planted firmly in the rocks. Crashing waves swirl around her, and she holds a shield adorned with the fierce image of a lion's head. This design captures a sense of strength and movement, making the 2020 issue a standout entry in the long-running series.
