A classic symbol of knowledge from antiquity finds a new home on this modern silver release from Niue. The design draws inspiration from the ancient Athenian Owl Tetradrachm, a silver coin that held immense influence more than two millennia ago. On this contemporary version, the nocturnal bird is depicted perched upon a branch against a textured, hammered backdrop, accompanied by a crescent moon and an olive branch. A striking visual contrast is achieved through the owl's eyes, which are finished with a highly reflective, mirror-like surface. Inscribed next to the owl are the letters AOE. This ancient Greek abbreviation is interpreted in a modern context to represent the values of truth, honor, and eternity (Alethia Orno Eternia). Historically, the owl was closely linked to Athena, the goddess of wisdom, serving as a powerful emblem of insight and inner strength. This particular issue is struck from one troy ounce of 0.999 fine silver and features a unique outer rim designed to allow multiple pieces to stack securely together. The opposite side of the coin features the classic effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Ian Rank-Broadley.
