In 2020, the United States Mint continued its celebration of national landmarks with a massive five-ounce silver coin honoring the Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park in Vermont. This particular release represents the fifty-fourth entry in the expansive America the Beautiful series and was the fifth design to debut in 2020. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint with a distinctive burnished finish, this impressive coin carries the 'P' mint mark and features its metal content and high purity incised directly along the edge. The reverse of the coin features a symbolic scene depicting a young girl planting a Norway spruce seedling beside an established tree. This image highlights the concept of environmental stewardship, a theme central to the Vermont park's history. The property itself has a deep connection to the American conservation movement. Charles Marsh originally built the central portion of the estate's main house in 1805. His son, George Perkins Marsh, became an influential early conservationist. Later, in 1869, Frederick H. Billings bought the estate, expanding the home and establishing a sustainably managed forest alongside a dairy farm. Eventually, Mary French Rockefeller and Laurance Rockefeller donated the historic property to the federal government, ensuring its preservation. On the obverse, the coin displays the classic portrait of George Washington. Surrounding the first president are the traditional inscriptions denoting the nation, the face value of twenty-five cents, and the national mottos of liberty and faith.
