The 2020 five-dollar gold piece represents a modern continuation of classic American coin design, struck at the West Point Mint with a tenth-ounce of pure gold content. This particular edition is characterized by its proof finish, which gives the flat fields of the coin a highly reflective, mirror-like quality that contrasts sharply with the frosted details of the raised designs. On the obverse, the design presents a celebrated depiction of Lady Liberty. She is shown in stride, holding a lit torch in one hand to represent enlightenment and an olive branch in the other as a symbol of peace. This iconic imagery was adapted from the famous early twentieth-century gold double eagle designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The reverse, created by Miley Busiek, shifts the focus to a family of eagles. It depicts a male eagle in mid-flight carrying an olive branch to a nest, where a female eagle and her young hatchlings await. Inscriptions on this side include the national mottos of trust and unity, alongside the weight and face value of the coin, all backed by the official guarantee of the United States Mint.
