The year 2021 marked a major milestone for the United States Mint American Eagle series, introducing the first design update since the coins debuted in 1986. This tenth-ounce gold coin showcases the highly anticipated Type 2 design, bringing a refreshed aesthetic to a classic American series. Manufactured at the West Point facility in New York, the coin is struck from 0.9167 fine gold and carries a face value of five dollars. On the front, the design revisits the legendary work of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, depicting Lady Liberty as she strides forward holding a torch and an olive branch. For this Type 2 release, artists restored subtle details directly from the original historical bronze cast, offering a closer look at the creator's initial vision. The year 2021 is clearly inscribed alongside the figure of Liberty. The reverse of the coin features an entirely new image: an intimate, highly detailed close-up portrait of an eagle, created by artist Jennie Norris. This powerful depiction replaced the previous family-of-eagles motif, representing the first major design evolution in thirty-five years of the series.
