The year 2021 marked a monumental shift for the United States Mint's premier bullion series. For the first time since the program debuted in 1986, a fresh reverse illustration was introduced. This specific coin, containing one troy ounce of pure gold content, represents the inaugural issue of this highly anticipated Type 2 design, preserved in flawless certified Mint State 70 condition. On the front, the design revisits the classic artwork originally created for the 1907 Double Eagle. Lady Liberty is depicted in a powerful stride, holding an olive branch in one hand and a lit torch in the other. To achieve the Type 2 designation, artists returned to the historic bronze cast from over a century ago, restoring subtle details that had been lost over decades of production. The back of the coin introduces a completely new visual narrative. Moving away from the original family of eagles motif, this version displays a highly detailed, close-up profile of an eagle's head. Designed by artist Jennie Norris, the portrait captures the intense gaze and intricate feather patterns of the national bird, bringing a modern aesthetic to this classic gold piece.
