While the United States Mint introduced platinum to the American Eagle lineup in 1997, palladium joined the family later, offering a distinct metallic luster. Struck in high relief at the Philadelphia facility, the coin features two historic designs by Adolph Weinman. The front of the coin displays a portrait of Liberty adorned with a winged Phrygian cap, a design originally created for the famous 1916 Mercury Dime. The reverse features an eagle perched on a rocky outcrop, an illustration Weinman originally developed for the American Institute of Architects gold medal starting in 1907.
