The year 2021 marked a significant milestone for the United States Mint with the debut of the Type 2 American Eagle gold coin. This particular specimen, certified in Mint State 69 condition, was struck on April 14, 2021. It represents one of the initial 2,000 coins minted on that inaugural day of Type 2 production, carrying a legacy that traces back to the launch of the American Eagle series in 1986. On the obverse, the iconic depiction of Lady Liberty walking forward with a torch and an olive branch is revitalized. Based on the classic Gold Double Eagle design by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, this modern version has been refreshed with subtle details recovered from the original historical bronze cast. The year 2021 is inscribed alongside the figure of Liberty. The reverse introduces a completely new visual narrative for the series, replacing the previous family of eagles with a highly detailed, close-up profile of a single eagle. Created by Jennie Norris, this portrait captures the intense gaze and intricate feathering of the national bird. Inscriptions on this side include the face value of 50 Dollars, the weight of 1 oz. of fine gold, and the traditional mottos "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "IN GOD WE TRUST."
