The year 2021 marked a significant milestone for the United States Mint as it introduced a redesigned look for its signature silver bullion coin. This 2021 Type 2 American Silver Eagle represents the first major design update since the series began in 1986. Struck in one troy ounce of 0.999 fine silver, the coin carries a face value of one dollar, backed by the United States government. On the obverse, the coin retains the classic Walking Liberty design originally created by Adolph A. Weinman. This iconic image of Lady Liberty enveloped in the American flag was first used on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar, which circulated from 1916 to 1947. The front of the coin features the legible inscriptions of LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the year 2021. While the front honors tradition, the reverse introduces an entirely new vision. Designed by Emily Damstra and sculpted by Michael Gaudioso, the new reverse features a detailed eagle carrying an oak branch in its talons, preparing to land. This dynamic image is accompanied by the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ONE DOLLAR, 1 OZ. FINE SILVER, and E PLURIBUS UNUM, completing a historic transition for this beloved series.
