The 2021 Gold Libertad represents a continuation of a celebrated precious metal tradition from Banco de México. Containing one troy ounce of 0.999 fine gold, this brilliant uncirculated piece is part of a series first introduced in this weight back in 1981. The coin is struck at the Casa de Moneda de México, recognized as the oldest active minting institution in the Americas. This specific 2021 release is highly restricted, with a worldwide mintage of only 1,050 pieces. On the reverse side, the design showcases the iconic Winged Victory statue, set against a backdrop of two famous Mexican volcanic peaks, Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl. The inscriptions include the metal content and purity, reading ORO PURO, 1 ONZA, and LEY 0.999, alongside the 2021 year of issue and the Mo mint mark. This artwork evolved from earlier designs used in 1981 and from 1991 to 1994, which drew inspiration from the classic Centenario coin. The obverse side displays the modern Mexican national shield, surrounded by the words ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS. Encircling this central emblem is a sequence of historical coats of arms used by the nation throughout its past, a design update that was first implemented in the year 2000.
