2021-W 1/2 oz Proof Gold Eagle (T2) PR-70 PCGS (FDI, Black Label)
The year 2021 marked a significant milestone for the United States Mint as it celebrated the thirty-fifth anniversary of its premier gold bullion series. Originally authorized by Congress in 1986, the American Eagle program underwent a major transformation in the middle of 2021, introducing a completely new reverse design to the public. This particular twenty-five dollar denomination coin is struck in a proof finish and contains a half ounce of gold, with a purity of 0.9167. On the obverse, the figure of Liberty stands with a torch and an olive branch. For this release, the design was carefully modified to incorporate finer details that align more closely with the original artistic vision of Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The year 2021 is clearly visible on this side, which is struck at the West Point Mint, as indicated by the W mint mark. The reverse showcases a fresh portrayal of an eagle, a design conceived by Jennie Norris and brought to life by sculptor Renata Gordon. Surrounding this new avian depiction are the official inscriptions required of United States legal tender, which read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, 25 DOLLARS, and 1/2 OZ. FINE GOLD. As a fully backed sovereign coin of the United States government, this piece represents a historic transition in modern American coinage. Production was strictly limited, with a maximum global mintage of just 9,800 pieces, all of which quickly sold out from the official minting source. This specimen has been certified in the highest possible proof grade, Proof 70 Deep Cameo, indicating its flawless strike and intense visual contrast.
