The year 2021 marked a significant milestone for the United States Mint as it bid farewell to a classic emblem. This fifty dollar modern gold piece represents the final appearance of the original reverse imagery that defined the series for decades. Struck with a polished, reflective proof finish, the coin contains one troy ounce of gold and was produced at the West Point facility in New York, with a limited mintage of 12,700 pieces. On the obverse, the design presents a powerful depiction of Lady Liberty, an adaptation of the famous artwork originally created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens for the double eagle. She stands holding a torch and an olive branch, symbolizing both light and peace. The reverse side, designed by Miley Busiek, captures a detailed family scene of America's national bird. A male eagle is depicted in flight, carrying an olive branch back to a nest where a female eagle watches over her young. This detailed scene is accompanied by the traditional inscriptions, including the national mottos IN GOD WE TRUST and E PLURIBUS UNUM, alongside the weight and face value of the coin.
