The year 2021 marked a monumental milestone for the American Eagle coin program, celebrating 35 years of these iconic issues. To honor this anniversary, the United States Mint introduced refreshed designs in the middle of the year, representing the first major design update since the series debuted in 1986. This particular proof coin showcases these historic changes in stunning detail, struck in a durable alloy of 0.9167 fine gold, which incorporates copper and silver to ensure the coin resists wear. On the obverse, viewers will find a meticulously updated rendering of Augustus Saint-Gaudens' classic Lady Liberty. This revised version brings out finer details from the artist's original vision, showing Liberty stepping forward with a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other. Legible inscriptions on this side include LIBERTY and the date 2021. The reverse introduces an entirely new artistic direction for the series, featuring a close-up, highly detailed portrait of an eagle. This powerful image was created by Jennie Norris, a designer with the Mint's Artistic Infusion Program, and brought to life by sculptor Renata Gordon. Surrounding this new portrait are the traditional inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the denomination of 50 DOLLARS, alongside the weight marking of 1 OZ.
